The Yearning Seed

Seeds, they are usually planted on purpose.  But, this is not always so.  Sometimes the seeds simply take their chances of the wind and end up in a place they never really though to be.  When the seed is tiny, it knows little, except that water and soil makes it grow.  Other plants of the kind and plants of a different type may ignore the seed at first.  They have their own growing to do after all!  If plants are too close together, they may have to rearrange their roots for best development.

But this is the story of one, single, tiny seed.  A rather special seed indeed!  A seed out of the very center of the sun!  Yes!  This seed braved the literal fires of the sun to come to earth.

One day there was an extremely bright sun spot.  As the sun belched fire and hot gasses, astronomers remarked the brightness of this sunspot surpassed the brightness of any in recent history.  While the astronomers took their readings on carefully tuned instruments, and recorded the magnitude of the sunspot, they failed to notice the tiny seed as it hurled earthward.

As it traveled through the cold void of space the seed took strength from its surroundings.  From the brightness of the sun, the seed had already taken the bright color yellow.  The heat of the sun tempered the seed to be strong as the strongest tempered steel.  The cold void of space gave the seed endurance to withstand freezing temperatures.  The empty vacuum of space gave the seed the ability to hold its breath.  More importantly, the ability to hold its tongue and not speak out without thinking first.  As the seed traveled alone, it learned to be alone for a period of time is, in of itself, not a necessarily bad thing.  In this way, the seed learned to appreciate the future when there would be companions.

As the seed came close to earth, it marveled at the amazing blue color of the oceans.  From the oceans, the seed took on the color blue.  As the seed entered the atmosphere, its lungs filled with air.  At first, the seed screamed and wept as it found its voice.  Then the seed sang with a pleasing song for any to hear.  Yet, it was not the seeds time for others to hear the song of the seed, at least not yet.

Finally, the seed took to the earth.  Roots took a tentative hold and slowly, the seed began to grow.  Such a curious plant!  Like so many others, but also different, so unique. Storms would shake the growing plant, yet that only made the tawny plant stronger and more determined to thrive.  On sunny day, the plant turned toward the sun.  The golden brightness of its pedals mirrored the sun!  The plant remembered the blue brightness of the oceans.  When rain fell, it fed into the blue hues of the plant.

As the plant grew and learned, other plants took notice of it and the plant found community and companionship.    Which is not to say the young plant didn't have times of trouble!  There was drought, times of perpetual overcast and often times when it seemed the closest plants were far away indeed!

But, come what may, the plant thrived.  This very special plant spread it's roots. It often shaded other, smaller plants in need.  It shared the water so all could live.  Then the plant noticed its roots began to itch!  The plant could not move its roots because of all the soil, but the itching became intolerable!

A tall oak, higher up on a nearby hilltop, often shaded all the plants in times of relentless heat and little water.  The oaks voice was solitary, quiet and hard to understand, but it was solid and friendly.  The younger plant was glad the oak was there.

One day the young plant was turning toward the sun  when dark clouds moved in.  The wind rose and the ran fell.  Then the rain turned to a river!  The soil began to wash away!  The plant feared it would topple!  As the rushing water began to push the plant over, The plants limbs began to become supple! The plant could move them!  Tiny branches at the ends of the limbs become fingers!  As the soil rushed away, roots became feet! Bark turned into skin and golden leaves became golden hair!  blue spots became blue eyes!

The beautiful plant had become something else! It ran from the rushing water.  It climbed the hill and approached the oak.

"What am I?  Who Am I?", the newly formed one beseeched the tall oak.

"You are woman.  Your name is Emily. ", the oak replied.
